1066
About 1000 years ago,
In 1066,
Great King Harold Godwinson,
Was put into a fix.
William coming from the South,
Hardrada from the North,
England had to prepare for war,
An army they called forth.
Harold set his army up,
Along the South East coast,
This was to prepare for William,
(The invasion worth the most).
But then Hardrada’s ships came in,
From Viking lands afar,
They fought and robbed with all their strength,
The towns they did devoir.
The King rushed up to the war,
And killed the Viking men,
At Stanford Bridge the fight took place,
Over 12,000 dead.
Then William’s army swept across,
The English Channel’s waves,
They landed in old Pevensey,
Sent many to their graves.
Harold heard the news and rushed down South,
In 4 days only just,
The armies met at Hastings then,
Will we win, we must.
Then it began, the great battle,
William was looking dim,
He called his army to retreat,
The soldiers followed him.
Harold’s army chased him back,
But little did they know,
It was a rouse, the King was set to lose,
And the Normans killed them all.
This poem was written about a significant event in British history, (the Norman invasion of medieval England).
